Honestly, I really wasn’t expecting anything special from a random conversation at an airport bar. But that’s the thing about life — it surprises you when you least expect it. I ended up sitting next to this person who worked for a big airline, and we just started talking — you know how it goes. One drink turned into three, and somewhere between the second and third round, they started sharing stuff I had absolutely no clue about. The kind of stuff that’s genuinely saved me hundreds of dollars since then.
I’m sharing everything here because why not? disappeared. More people should know this.
Tuesday Nights Are the Sweet Spot
You’ve probably heard “book on Tuesdays” before, right? But here’s the part nobody mentions. It’s not just any time on Tuesday. This employee told me airlines drop their prices late Tuesday night, around 10 PM to midnight. That’s when competing airlines match each other’s sales. By Wednesday morning, some of those deals had already . I tried it myself three times now,, and yeah, it actually works.
Don‘t Search the Same Flight Over and Over
This one kinda freaked me out. Apparently, when you keep searching the same route, prices can go up. The websites track your activity through cookies. The employee laughed, said, “We literally bank on people panicking.” So now I always search in incognito mode or clear my cookies first. Simple trick, but nobody does it.
One-Way Tickets Can Be Cheaper Than Round Trips
I know it sounds completely backwards. But sometimes, grabbing two separate one-way tickets on different airlines actually ends up being way cheaper than booking a round trip with just one. I tried it on a trip to Denver and ended up saving close to $180 — no joke.
Call Instead of Booking Online
This surprised me the most. The employee said phone agents sometimes have access to discounts that don’t show up online. Especially if a flight isn’t selling well ,won’t advertise it anywhere, obviously. I called once, mentioned I found a lower, price on another site, and they matched it plus threw in free seat selection. Wild.
Skip the Weekends for Departure
If you’re planning a trip, try to fly out on a Wednesday or Saturday evening — you’ll save a good chunk of money.
Avoid booking flights on Sundays or Fridays if you can, because everyone’s flying on those days, so prices shoot up. Most business travellers fly those peak days. So airlines jack up prices, knowing companies will pay.
I’m not saying every trick works every single time. But since that airport conversation, I’ve saved real money. Sometimes the best travel advice comes from the people working behind the scenes — not some fancy booking app.
